About the Farm

As a child, Judy always dreamed of living on a farm. Discovering alpacas was the incentive to make the dream come true. At Tuckaway Farm,we raise ARI registered huacaya alpacas. Our mission, working in harmony with nature, is to breed unique, amiable, alpacas with remarkable fleece. We set high goals and work consistently to improve both our foundation herd and the alpacas we offer for sale.

Our first encounter with alpacas was a lark just to satisfy our curiosity. But we were captivated. We couldn't stop talking about these intriguing animals and had to learn more. We ordered back issues of Alpacas Magazine, purchased books, and spent enlightening hours on the Internet. We also began a round of farm visits, searching for two perfect ladies to start our herd.

The search ended on a farm in the hills of North Georgia. As Judy stood at the fence, Kiss leaned over and “kissed” her and there was no turning back. Our spirits sailed. We returned home eager to create our farm. Learning the difference between orgling and pronking was just the beginning. There were decisions to make about goals and objectives, financing, animal care, and farm layout. We wrote a business plan, put up fences and reworked an old horse barn. We also spent endless time explaining to friends and relatives that "no, they are not birds."

As we progressed, we purchased more alpacas to add to our herd. We welcomed them home in the fall, along with our first two crias who fascinated us with their antics and soulful eyes. We were now official alpaca farmers!

Our journey would have been slow and difficult were it not for the guidance and support we received from others. Recognizing this, we are committed to giving individual attention with all aspects of setting up a farm, from providing guidelines for a business plan, through fencing and shelter design, stock selection, daily care and farm promotion. We want our clients to be successful!
